 Community Support

The Tasman Rugby Union's official charities are The Cancer Society, Canteen and the Child Cancer Foundation.
While our main efforts will go towards supporting these two organisations, our players are continually active in the community visiting schools and supporting a range of community events.

Please see the below links for the application forms.

SCHOOLS
In 2010 players from the Tasman Makos will be visiting school throughout the Marlborough, Nelson and Tasman regions!

Keep an eye out for them.

Makos have close shave for Charity
As lock for the Tasman Makos, Jarrod Aberhart is used to his fair share of pain, but yesterday afternoon he faced a far more fearsome foe than a mere rugby team – chest waxing.

Aberhart spent 20 minutes wincing his way through the torment and the laughter of his team-mates, all the while remembering that it was for a good cause.

The Makos were undergoing the extreme grooming as part of Mico Plumbing's Shave Day in Nelson, organised to raise money for Cure Kids.

Team members could elect to have their head razored or buzz cut, a strip from their leg shaved, or – if they were really game – have their chest waxed. They raised $1500 for the charity.

Once he regained his speech, Aberhart said the waxing was in the same league as a game of rugby in terms of toughness.

"You don't get used to it – there's a constant sting," he said.

Captain Chris Jack said he was proud of Aberhart's performance, labelling it a "gutsy effort".

He soon decided to follow suit with a wax of his own.

The players were getting a good deal – usually chest waxing costs $50.

Mico Plumbing assistant manager Andrew Simpson said everyone had been really positive, with people quick to help, donate or get involved.

"Everyone has been really into it. As soon as they hear about it they get excited."

He was particularly impressed with the team's turnout.

"When I thought of inviting [the Makos] I only thought a few would come," he said.

Mr Simpson had opted for a shaved head, but as he usually had it quite short anyway, he decided to spend the last two months growing it longer beforehand.

Fellow Mico staff member Paul Casey found out about the event only yesterday morning, but by the time it came to shave his head staff had managed to make it worth $1200.

"I was hijacked, they had got the money together and then told me," he said.

He wouldn't be doing it if it wasn't for a good cause, he said.

The Nelson event raised $5500 for the charity, which was set up to address the lack of research into life-threatening childhood illnesses in New Zealand.
