Marlborough Boys' College were given a rugby lesson by St Bede's College from Christchurch, thumped 10-55 at Renwick in their Press Cup Crusaders Region secondary schools clash on Saturday.
MBC stayed with the visitors for a while and trailed 5-19 at halftime, but as they attempted to play catch-up during the last quarter, the visitors swooped on errors and the scoreline blew out.
Halfback Blake Parata scored a first-half try for MBC and hooker Billy Collins drove over from a forward drive to score in the second spell.
Collins shone in an out-gunned forward pack and in the backs, first-five Hayden Howard defended strongly as did George Davies in midfield.MBC coach Gray Cornelius was disappointed with the result and said his team struggled at lineout time, and while the scrum held its own, they were out-classed in most areas around the field.
Cornelius said missing first-up tackles proved costly against a St Bede's side which had pace and power in the backs and a well-drilled forward pack.
MBC take on Waimea College at Waimea on Thursday needing to win to secure a home play-off for the plate.
